New Delhi: Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, who has come for the default bail in a special CBI court, has suffered a major setback. The court has rejected the bail plea. Deshmukh had approached the court seeking relief in the corruption case. Interestingly, the court has dismissed the plea of two more accused in the case. The CBI arrested the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader in April 2021. At present, he is in judicial custody.

Special CBI judge SH Gwalani dismissed the plea of 73-year-old Anil Deshmukh. Advocate Aniket Nikam, appearing for him, said he would look into the order and then consider challenging it. The court has rejected the bail pleas of Sanjeev Palande (Deshmukh's former private secretary) and Kundan Shinde (Deshmukh's former personal associate).

It was said on behalf of the trio that the CBI has not filed the chargesheet within 60 days. It was also said that the charge sheet filed by the agency was incomplete. Deshmukh, Palande and Shinde had sought bail on the same ground. Significantly, under Section 173 of the CPC, the charge sheet has to be filed within 60 days of the arrest of the accused. Failing this, the accused can demand a default bail.
