New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday morning detained Vinay Kulkarni, a Congress leader and a minister in Siddaramaiah's cabinet, in the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Karnataka. According to officials, the CBI investigating the murder of Yogesh Gowda, a 2016 BJP district panchayat member, has arrested senior Congress leader Vinay Kulkarni in custody.

The 6-member team of the agency, led by CBI officer Rakesh Ranjan, has taken Vinay from his residence to custody in Barakotri in Dharwad district of Karnataka. Kulkarni is brought to the Dharwad Suburban Police Station for questioning. It is noteworthy that on 15 June 2016 Yogesh Gowda, who had strongly criticized Vinay Kulkarni, was brutally cut to death by five miscreants in Saptpur, Dharwad. The incident took place while Yogesh Gowda was in the gym. The entire incident was captured in CCTV in the gym complex. The five accused were identified as close associates of Kulkarni. At that time, Kulkarni was a minister in the Siddaramaiah cabinet of the Congress.

It is said that Yogesh Gowda was killed over an alleged property dispute. After the BJP came to power in the state, the case was handed over to the CBI in September last year. In March this year, six people were arrested in connection with the murder.
