Imphal: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken decisive action by filing a chargesheet against seven individuals accused of orchestrating the looting of arms and ammunition from the 2nd Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in Manipur amidst the ethnic turmoil that engulfed the state last August.
Presenting the chargesheet before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup (Metro), located in Guwahati, marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the heinous crime.
The incident, which occurred on August 3, 2023, saw armed miscreants allegedly pilfering 300 arms, 19,800 rounds of ammunition, 800 varieties of munitions, and associated accessories from two rooms within the IRB Headquarters situated in Naranseina, Bishnupur district.
Following the gravity of the situation, the CBI swiftly intervened by initiating a case against the perpetrators on August 24, 2023. The agency took charge of the investigation, building upon the foundation laid by the First Information Report (FIR) filed at the Moirang police station in Bishnupur.
Currently, the CBI's rigorous investigation remains ongoing, with dedicated efforts focused on identifying and prosecuting all individuals implicated in the crime. This commitment underscores the agency's dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for such reprehensible acts.
The backdrop of the incident is rooted in the ethnic tensions that erupted in Manipur, particularly between the Valley-majority Meiteis and the hill-majority Kukis, starting from May 3, 2023. The resultant sporadic violence has exacted a heavy toll, claiming the lives of over 180 individuals and displacing thousands more within the state.
As Manipur grapples with the aftermath of these tragic events, the pursuit of justice by the CBI serves as a beacon of hope for the affected communities, signaling a resolute stance against criminal activities that threaten peace and stability in the region.
