Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is gearing up for a cabinet expansion on Tuesday, March 5, following the recent success of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Rajya Sabha elections held on February 27, where it secured victory in eight seats across the state.
Sources reveal that the cabinet expansion is likely to include three new members from the BJP, along with two legislators from the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and one from the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP). The decision comes in the wake of RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary's confirmation on February 12 regarding his party's entry into the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Chaudhary cited the prevailing circumstances as the catalyst for this swift decision.
Reportedly, differences between Chaudhary and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav over the allocation of Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh prompted the move. Amidst anticipation surrounding the cabinet expansion, there is speculation regarding the potential return of SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar to the Uttar Pradesh cabinet. Rajbhar, a former ally of Akhilesh Yadav, was dismissed from the Yogi Adityanath-led government in 2019 for "anti-alliance activities." However, he rejoined the NDA in July 2023.
With the imminent cabinet expansion, the political landscape in Uttar Pradesh is poised for significant changes as the state government seeks to bolster its governance structure ahead of forthcoming challenges.
