Patna: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its probe into the NEET-UG paper leak case by questioning several accused lodged in Patna's Beur jail. According to sources, during the interrogation, most of the accused named Sanjeev Mukhiya and Sikandar Yadvendu as the masterminds behind the scheme.
Sources revealed significant discrepancies in the statements given by the accused. Sanjeev Mukhiya is alleged to have arranged accommodation for nearly 25 candidates at a boys' hostel associated with the Learn Play School in Patna on May 4, the day before the NEET-UG exam. It is reported that the candidates were provided with leaked question papers and answer sheets at the hostel. Mukhiya’s son, Shiv, is already incarcerated for his involvement in the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) teacher recruitment exam paper leak.
Sikandar Yadvendu, a junior engineer with the municipal committee of Danapur, has also emerged as a prime suspect. The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police, which initially investigated the case before the CBI took over, identified Yadvendu's involvement in the illicit distribution of NEET question papers.
The EOU had arrested 18 individuals in connection with the case before the Centre ordered the CBI to take over the investigation. The CBI made its first arrests on Thursday. The investigation continues to uncover the depth of the conspiracy and the extent of the involvement of various suspects.
NEET-UG 2024, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), was held on May 5 across 4,750 centres in 571 cities, with over 24 lakh candidates participating. Results were announced on June 4. However, allegations of irregularities surfaced soon after the results, particularly when 67 students from Bihar achieved top ranks. These allegations of a question paper leak have escalated into a major political controversy.
Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing and emphasized that the Centre will not shield anyone involved. He affirmed the strict stance of the Supreme Court, the Centre, and the Bihar government on the issue, stating, "It will also be ensured that such a thing does not happen in the future." Manjhi, a former Bihar Chief Minister, reiterated the commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examination process.
The investigation continues to unravel the extent of the scandal, with authorities determined to hold all responsible parties accountable and prevent such incidents from recurring.
