Center directs states to take steps for protection of "vulnerable sections" especially children

New Delhi: The Central government has directed states and Union Territories to take steps to protect children, senior citizens who lost their families during corona virus infection. The Union Home Ministry has written to all states and Union Territory Governments to check crime against women, children, senior citizens, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes during the epidemic.

The Home Ministry has said that the government is taking cognizance of the impact of corona epidemic on vulnerable sections. It has also been asked that the states give priority to the problems related to these people and make adequate arrangements. The Ministry of Home Affairs's Department of Women's Safety has issued the letter to the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories, DGP of the States. The Ministry has said that Rs 107 crore has been allocated for construction/strengthening of women help desks in police stations. Such desks are instructed to have lawyers, psychologists, NGO experts who can help women register cases, give them shelters and other things.

100 crore has been released to states/UTs for resolution of smuggling related cases. It has been asked to set up anti-human trafficking units (AHTUs) in each district. The unit will be comprised of police officers as well as officials from other departments to prevent trafficking. "These units are very essential, especially during the corona epidemic, many children are becoming orphans due to the death of their parents," the Home Ministry explained.
