New Delhi: Government of India has extended liberalized rules of onion import till 31 January next year. The government has taken this step in view of increasing domestic supply of onions and curbing its retail prices. For import of onions, the government on 31 October had allowed import under the liberalization system till December 15, under the Vegetable Quarantine Order (PQ) 2003, exempting it from the additional declaration on polarization and plant-related phytosanitary certification.
This exemption has been extended by one and a half month till 31 January. In the official statement released on Thursday by the Ministry of Agriculture, it has been said that there is concern among the general public about the high prices of onions in the market. In view of this, the relaxation in the onion import rules is being extended till 31 January 2021. However, this relaxation is given some conditions. The statement said that fumigation of imported onion in India without polarization would have to be done by the importer through a recognized provider.
Quarantine officials will closely examine the imported consignment and release it only after it is assured that it is pesticide-free. The ministry said that under the conditions, an affidavit will also be taken from the importers that the imported onion is for consumption only and will not be transmitted.
