Black Fungus: Firms to make Amphotericin B drug in India, says govt

New Delhi: The infection of black fungus (mucormycosis) is wreaking havoc in the country amid the outbreak of corona epidemic. In view of its transition, the Central Government has directed all states and Union Territories to declare it an epidemic. More than 5,000 infected people have been found and more than 100 people have lost their lives across the country in the last one month.

On the directions of the Central Government, the Government of Assam, Odisha, Rajasthan, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Haryana have declared black fungus as an epidemic under Section 1897 of the Epidemic Act. Meanwhile, the Central Government has allowed five more companies, Amcure Pharma, Netco, Gufiq Biosciences, Alembic Pharma and Lyca Pharma, to manufacture an amfoteracin B, which is used in the treatment of black fungus, after Bharat Serum, Milan, BDR Pharma, Sun Pharma, Life Care and Cipla for its treatment. At the same time, there have been 11 mucormycosis drug manufacturing companies in the country.

Giving this information, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandaviya said that companies producing Black Fungus Injection (Amphotericin B) in the country have already been asked to increase production. Mandaviya said every effort is being made to address the shortage of anti-fungal drug Anfoteracin B used in the treatment of black fungus. Mandaviya said Indian companies have also placed orders for import of 6 lakh wheels of Amphotericin B.
