New Delhi: Now prices of packaged goods of every item will be written in two ways. One price will be of the maximum retail price, the other will be of unit price. That is, if there is a packet of 5 kg of flour, then the price of 1 kg of flour will also be written on it. This will give consumers an idea of how expensive or cheaper they are taking than the rest of the companies. This new rule is going to come into effect from April 1, 2022. Customers will be able to easily know the price per unit.
The Ministry of Food Consumer Affairs has changed the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 for this purpose. According to this new rule, companies will also be required to write unit cell prices on packaged items. This will make it easier for customers to know about the profit and loss on purchases. For example, suppose you buy a packet of 5 kg of flour from two companies. So under the new rule, the unit cell price on both packets will show which company's product is cheaper and costly for you. At the same time, MRP should also be written on the packet. The MRP of different companies may be the same, but the unit sale price may vary.
According to the new rule, companies that manufacture packets of more than 1 kg will also have to write unit cell price per kg. In addition, it is also mandatory to write MRP. For example, a packet of 5 kg flour will also have to be written with a price of 1 kg of flour. That'll be the unit cell price. Also, the MRP of the entire packet will be written. If a packet is less than 1 kg, the unit cell price will be written on it per gram. This will enable customers to know how much money they are paying for each gram.
The Ministry of Food Consumer Affairs has removed the Section 2 law to amend the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. According to the old rule, rice or wheat flour was required to be packed in 100 grams, 200 grams, 500 grams and 1 kg, 1.25 kg, 1.5 kg. Now, this rule has been changed and it covers packets of different loads. Companies are looking to sell different quantities of packaged materials and permission was sought from the ministry for the same. Some demands of companies have been accepted and some have not. The metrology law has allowed unit cell price by abolishing Section 2.
