NEW DELHI: The  Ministry of Power said in a statement on Tuesday, March 7, that the Central government has accepted a report of a task force or expert panel which paves the way for modern and smart electricity transmission system in India. 

"The country will soon have a modern and smart power transmission system with features like real-time monitoring and automated grid operation, better situational assessment, capability to have increased share of renewable capacity in the power-mix, improved utilisation of transmission capacity, greater resilience against cyber attacks as well as natural disasters, centralised and data-driven decision-making, reduction in forced outages through self-correcting system, and more "said the ministry.

In its report, the task force made a number of technological and digital recommendations that can be used to modernise the state transmission systems.

These suggestions have been grouped under the categories of upgrading labour skills, smart and future-ready transmission system, and utilisation of new technologies in construction, supervision, operations, and management.

Based on the performance of international transmission utilities, the task group also suggested standards for voltage regulation and transmission network availability.

It claimed that the long-term interventions are planned to be implemented over a period of 3-5 years, and the short-term to medium-term suggestions will be executed over a period of 1-3 years.

The other members of the task force included Representatives from state transmission utilities, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), central transmission utilities, MeiTY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology), IIT Kanpur, NSGPMU, and EPTA.
