NEW DELHI: The central government has announced the extension of the 'Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024' by two months, now running until September 30. The Ministry of Heavy Industries confirmed this extension on Friday and also revealed that the scheme's total budget has been increased to Rs 778 crore.

Originally launched on March 13, 2024, the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024 (EMPS 2024) aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across India. The scheme was initially set to run from April 1 to July 31, 2024, with a budget of Rs 500 crore but has now been revised and extended.

Under the EMPS 2024, buyers can receive subsidies up to Rs 10,000 for two-wheeler EVs, Rs 25,000 for small three-wheeler EVs, and Rs 50,000 for large three-wheeler EVs.

The updated scheme now targets supporting 560,789 EVs, including 500,080 electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) and 60,709 electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws). This breakdown includes 13,590 rickshaws and e-carts, along with 47,119 e-3Ws in the L5 category. To encourage advanced technologies, the incentives will only be available for EVs equipped with advanced batteries. The scheme is limited by funds, and the number of EVs eligible for subsidies is capped for each category.

The ministry emphasized that the scheme focuses on providing affordable and eco-friendly public transportation. Therefore, it mainly applies to e-2Ws and e-3Ws registered for commercial use. However, privately or corporately owned registered e-2Ws will also qualify for the subsidies.
