New Delhi: The process for the appointment of the new Chief Justice (CJI) of the country has started. According to sources, a letter has been written by the Law Ministry to the current CJI UU Lalit. In this, he has been asked to nominate a successor. Let us tell you that this is a formal process regarding the appointment of a new CJI, which is started by writing a letter from the Law Ministry. However, it is believed that after the CJI, the senior-most judge of the apex court, DY Chandrachud, can be appointed as the 50th Chief Justice of India.
It is noteworthy that, usually, the law ministry writes to the incumbent CJI asking him to nominate a successor. The CJI nominates the senior-most judge after him as his successor. In such a situation, Justice DY Chandrachud is the senior-most judge after the CJI. If this process is done traditionally, then only Justice Chandrachud can be appointed as the new CJI. Let us inform you that the current CJI UU Lalit is retiring on November 8.
Explain that Justice DY Chandrachud was appointed as a judge in the apex court on May 13, 2016. Prior to that, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013 to May 13, 2016. Prior to that DY Chandrachud has also been a judge of the Bombay High Court. From 1998 to March 29, 2000, Chandrachud also held the post of Additional Solicitor General of India. He was conferred the title of Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court in June 1998. He did his BA Honors in Economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. After this, he got a degree of LLB from Delhi University. He did his LLM and doctorate in Judicial Sciences from Harvard University in the US.
