CHENNAI: In a shocking report from Chennai, a mother and son died in a road accident in Maraimalai Nagar today, February 8, when a speeding omni bus hit the 2-wheeler in which they were travelling towards the city.

The incident occurred reportedly at 9.45 am on Wednesday on GST Road, opposite Maraimalai Nagar Municipality’s office.

According to police sources, the deceased have been identified as Maraimalai Nagar resident R. Saravanan, 47, and his mother Thilagavathy, 67. Saravanan was riding his two-wheeler with his mother as they made their way to the hospital.

They made a U-turn close to the municipal building and were moving in the direction of the city and the hospital. Behind them, a private bus struck and ran over their car. Saravanan passed away there and then, and his mother, who had been seriously hurt, was sent to a private hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Their remains were taken for an autopsy at Government General Hospital in Chengalpattu. Guduvanchery's Traffic Investigation Police have opened an investigation into a matter. The bus driver is being sought by the police.

Earlier on February 1, in another incident, a mother and son died on the spot in a road accident when the motorcycle on which they were travelling was hit by an SUV at Chilamarri village of Pedda Adisherlapally mandal in the district. The victims were Gunji Venkayamma and her son Ganesh from Ongole in Andhra Pradesh. Their family had come to Thatikal in the mandal about 10 years back.
