The four-day Mahaparv Chhath has started from yesterday. First Day was Nahay-Khay. Today is the second day of Chhath and today Kharna is being celebrated. The Panchami of Kartik Shukla is celebrated as Kharna. It means purification. It is also known as Lohanda.
Special offerings of Chhath Puja are made on the day of Kharna. Chhath festival is considered very difficult and a lot of care should be taken to do it. It is said that all the wishes of those who follow the rules of observing fast are fulfilled. On the day of Kharna, women take bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. She then applies vermilion from nose to forehead. On the day of Kharna, the Vrati observe fast throughout the day and in the evening prepares the prasad by making sathi rice and jaggery kheer on a wooden stove. The women then worship the Sun God and receive the Prasad. After eating their offerings, these offerings are distributed among the remaining members of the household.
It is said that after receiving the Prasad, the 36 hours of fast of women begins. It is recognized that Goddess Shashthi (VI Miya) arrives in the house only after Kharna Puja. On the day of Kharna, the devotees worship the Sun God and Chhath Mata with a pure heart and offer jaggery kheer. Kharna Prasad is made in a very pure way. It is believed that eating it purifies from the body to mind.
