Pumpkin has great religious significance in Hindu society. In various rituals where a pumpkin is sacrificed as a goat. Pumpkin is also considered as the eldest son. The tribal women of Bastar are also afraid to cut it. It is popularly believed that cutting a pumpkin by a woman means sacrificing her elder son. Therefore, the women of Bastar first get two pieces of pumpkin before any man, only then they themselves make small pieces of pumpkin.

It is also custom that pumpkin is never cut alone. Always two pumpkins are cut together, but if only one pumpkin is to be cut, a lemon, chilli or potato is used to make a pair. Arjun Nag, senior tribal society and Divisional President of Halba society, says that there is an old social belief that if a coconut is rotten at the time of breaking, people consider it inauspicious. It is the same with pumpkin. It is considered an important social fruit. A pumpkin vegetable fills the stomach of at least 30-40 people, but if it gets spoiled suddenly, then the banquet program is interrupted and time and money are wasted in finding another vegetable.

Due to the above belief, if a woman cuts a pumpkin and if it gets rotten, then the society accuses the woman of being impure, so women avoid cutting the pumpkin even to avoid public shame.
