In response to India's Supreme Court's recent ruling on Article 370, China reiterated its stance on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for dialogue and consultation between India and Pakistan to resolve the longstanding Kashmir issue.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reaffirmed China's consistent and clear position on the matter while addressing a query from a Pakistani journalist. India's Supreme Court had upheld the central government's decision to revoke the provisions of Article 370, which granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.
"China maintains a steadfast position regarding the Kashmir issue," stated Mao Ning. "It is imperative to address this historical dispute between India and Pakistan through peaceful means, in accordance with the UN Charter, UNSC resolutions, and relevant bilateral agreements."
Highlighting the importance of dialogue and consultations among concerned parties, Mao stressed the necessity of settling the dispute to ensure regional peace and stability.
The Supreme Court's decision not only validated the central government's revocation of Article 370 but also urged for the swift restoration of statehood and scheduled assembly elections in the region by September 30 next year.
While China advocates dialogue for resolution, Pakistan, an enduring ally of China, dismissed the Supreme Court's verdict, asserting that the international law does not recognize India's "unilateral and illegal actions" of August 5, 2019, regarding Article 370.
