China is increasingly making its mark in the technology, mining, and energy industries across resource-rich West Asian countries, even as it maintains robust ties with India.

In Kuwait, known for its abundant oil resources, the tech sector is witnessing a surge in collaboration with China. Zain Kuwait, a leading operator, recently completed successful 5.5G trials in partnership with Chinese telecom giant Huawei. Additionally, Huawei has teamed up with another telecom operator, Ooredoo, to provide network infrastructure services in the country. Notably, Kuwait's primary IT agency recently organized a meeting on artificial intelligence (AI) in cooperation with Huawei, focusing on AI's role in local governance. Furthermore, Chinese state media has reportedly gained ground in Kuwait's local media landscape by providing financial incentives.

Saudi Arabia, amid efforts to modernize its economy, is also welcoming Chinese involvement in its mining sector. A joint Saudi-Chinese consortium is poised to invest approximately $30 million in exploring copper and zinc mining opportunities in the Madinah province. This significant contract was awarded to the consortium earlier this year.

However, China has encountered challenges in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where the local AI agency has decided to cut ties with Chinese hardware suppliers following advice allegedly received from the United States.

In contrast, China is expanding its footprint in Saudi Arabia beyond mining, venturing into infrastructure development. The China State Construction Engineering Corporation secured a substantial $2 billion contract for constructing buildings and infrastructure in Saudi cities.

Bahrain has also caught China's attention, with offers to bolster the country's space sector. Talks of cooperation between two space agencies encompass peaceful space exploration, data exchange, joint projects, and satellite development.

In war-torn Syria, China is being sought for assistance in rebuilding efforts, particularly in the oil and mineral resources sector. Recent discussions between the two sides have centered on cooperation in the oil industry.

Turning to Northern Africa, China has extended a helping hand to Tunisia, aiming to enhance its transportation network.

China's expanding presence across West Asia underscores its growing influence in the region's vital sectors, even as it navigates various geopolitical dynamics and economic opportunities.
