Jaipur: A situation akin to the hijab controversy in Karnataka unfolded in Rajasthan on Saturday (17th February) as female students arrived at a government school in Jodhpur wearing hijabs instead of the designated dress code. The incident occurred at Government Higher Secondary School No. 2 in Pipar City, situated in the rural areas of Jodhpur district, Rajasthan. Despite instructions to adhere to the prescribed uniform, students, accompanied by their parents, expressed their resolve to continue wearing hijabs to school.

A video capturing parents arguing with the school principal over the issue circulated widely online. School authorities reiterated the importance of following the specified school uniform. Additional personnel from Pipar police station were summoned to the scene, and other parents also arrived at the school. All students were reminded to comply with the mandated dress code.

The controversy arose when more than ten Muslim female students arrived at the school wearing headscarves. A teacher intervened and informed them that hijabs were not part of the school uniform. Consequently, the girls were denied entry to the school premises due to the violation of the dress code.

Tensions escalated as the female students brought their parents to the school, who engaged in arguments with the principal, affirming their intention to continue sending their daughters to school wearing hijabs regardless of the school's regulations. The parents accused the teacher of mistreating the girls, with one alleging that the teacher referred to the hijab-wearing student as 'Chambal Ki Daku'. However, the school principal maintained that the students were barred from entering the school due to dress code violations. Principal Ram Kishor Sankhala stated, "We have instructed children to wear the government-prescribed school uniform. Some individuals from other communities came to the school and created a commotion. The situation was defused with the arrival of additional police personnel."

Councillor Muzaffar Khalifa and the husband of the municipality vice-president staged a protest demanding clarification on the dress code guidelines. They warned of consequences for the teachers and filed a complaint with the police. The situation was eventually resolved with police intervention.

Meanwhile, Muslim parents arrived at the school and engaged in discussions with the school administration, seeking clarification. They asserted that the students were only covering their heads and wearing face masks. Chief Block Education Officer Sumer Singh intervened, emphasizing the importance of students adhering to the prescribed dress code.

Notably, Rajasthan’s Education Minister Madan Dilawar emphasized the government's stance on dress codes in schools, stating that uniforms prescribed by the state government must be followed. He reiterated that religious conversions would not be permitted in any government or private school in Rajasthan and would be strictly prohibited.
