Srinagar: Excitement is palpable in Udhampur as the first river rejuvenation project in North India, "Devika," was completed in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district on Sunday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for various projects in Jammu and Kashmir on February 20.

The Devika River holds significant religious importance for local communities, often referred to as the sister of the holy Ganga. Recognizing its spiritual significance, the government initiated the Devika Rejuvenation Project in 2019, drawing inspiration from the successful "Namami Gange" program.

Residents of Udhampur are welcoming the project as a "rebirth" for the Devika River, anticipating environmental restoration and potential economic benefits through sustainable tourism and local business opportunities.

Raghav Raine, a local resident, expressed gratitude for the transformation witnessed in the Devika River area, praising the infrastructural developments and enhanced accessibility. He eagerly anticipates Prime Minister Modi's visit to Devika, hoping for further progress.

College student Rohit Kumar also lauded the improvements in the city, particularly the cleanliness and development along the Devika River, thanking PM Modi for his efforts.

Felmo Devi expressed optimism about future economic growth due to the positive changes brought about by the project, foreseeing increased tourist attraction and subsequent development.

Tariq Shah highlighted the transformative impact of Prime Minister Modi's tenure on the Devika River, praising the beautification efforts and cleanliness initiatives undertaken.

Udhampur, known for the Devika River, holds rich cultural and religious significance. According to historical accounts, the Devika River is considered a manifestation of Mother Goddess Parwati, with legends associating it with Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma.

The completion of the Devika Rejuvenation Project marks a significant milestone in the efforts to preserve and revitalize this sacred river, reflecting the government's commitment to environmental conservation and cultural heritage preservation.
