Closing Bell: Sensex Up 162 pt, Britannia falls 4-pc

Market frontline indices closed the day higher after indices fluctuating between losses and gains. The NSE Nifty ended the day with gains of 41 points at 11937-level, while Sensex Closed at 40,707-mark, up by 162 points. Banking stocks witnessed good gains which helped push the indices into the green. Shares in Britannia Industries were the biggest loser in trade, falling by almost 4 per cent. Shares of Hindustan Zinc advanced near 4.5 per cent, after the company declared a good dividend of Rs 21.30 per share. In the financial performance, the company posted a 7 pc year-on-year fall in consolidated net profit at Rs 1,940 crore for the second quarter (Q2) of the FY 2021, as against Rs 2,081 crore during the corresponding quarter last year.

Other losers in the Nifty packs of stocks were Tata Consultancy Service (TCS), SBI Life Insurance, Hero Motor Corp and Nestle India.  Top gainers in the Nifty were Power Grid, Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel, Hindalco and Gail India.

From the mid-cap space ICICI Securities had a weak session in trade today with the stock falling almost 3 pc. Aditya Birla Capital was the top gainer from the Mid-cap Nifty rising 8 pc in trade. Meanwhile, majority European markets were trading with losses led by the German DAX, which declined as much as 1.25 per cent in trade.

The Nifty Metal index was the other top gainer in the sectoral indices in today's session, closing 2.2 percent higher. Fast moving Consumer indeed (FMCG) index fell 1 pc  in today's session led by Britannia  and Colgate-Palmolive.
