Srinagar: A cloudburst in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir has caused significant damage, leading to the closure of the vital Srinagar-Leh national highway, officials reported on Sunday.

"Traffic on the Srinagar-Leh road has been suspended until further notice due to road damage at Kacherwan in Ganderbal district," stated an official from the traffic control room.

The road was damaged during the cloudburst that occurred overnight. A police official mentioned that several buildings, including residential houses, were also damaged due to the flash floods triggered by the cloudburst.

Authorities are on the ground providing assistance and help to those affected, according to the official.

The highway closure has cut off the Kashmir Valley from the Ladakh union territory and rendered the Baltal base camp for the Amarnath Yatra inaccessible.
