CHENNAI : MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice of India NV Ramana about the appointment of judges, the establishment of permanent Supreme Court regional benches in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai, and the declaration of Tamil as the official language.

"We must not lose sight of the fact that the judicial branch must also reflect our Constitution's ethos of cooperative federalism. In light of this, it is even more important that the Supreme Court and the High Court reflect the broad and pluralistic society of our great country. We have seen a decline in representation from all sections of society in the higher court in recent years, resulting to a 'diversity deficit,' "In a letter to Prime Minister Modi and Chief Justice Ramana, the Chief Minister stated.

Stalin stated that he believes that all states should have proportional representation on the Supreme Court bench. It will then accurately depict the diverse nature of Indian society in all of its aspects. "Therefore, I respectfully propose that the conditions to ensure socioeconomic diversity and social fairness in the appointment of High Court and Supreme Court Judges be included in the Memorandum of Procedure to Appoint Judges and that it be followed in its entirety," he added.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu also stressed the importance of the Supreme Court of India's Permanent Regional Benches. He said that because the Supreme Court is located in New Delhi, which is not evenly distributed across the country and is far away from several states, particularly the southern, southwestern, and eastern states, individuals in these states are denied their fundamental right to visit the Court.
