Kanpur: Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh's largest industrial city, has got the gift of the metro. CM Yogi Adityanath flagged off the metro's first trial run by pressing the button on Wednesday. Now Kanpur residents will be able to enjoy the journey in the metro by December. The foundation stone of Kanpur Metro was laid in 2019. Up Metro Corporation has completed the first phase in record time after hard work, even after being lockdown due to the corona epidemic.

It is expected that if everything goes well, the metro will start running in a stretch of about 9 km between IIT Kanpur and Moti Lake. Cm Yogi also attacked the opposition while addressing the officials and leaders present thereafter flagging off the trial run of the metro. He said previous governments lacked willpower, otherwise when Kanpur would have got the metro. CM Yogi said he was happy that the foundation stone was laid in his government and now the people of Kanpur will be able to enjoy it. He said the metro will not only offer an option of movement for people but will also help in controlling pollution.

Under the first phase, UPMRC has constructed a nine-kilometre-long elevated track from IIT to Motijheel. Nine metro stations (IIT, Kalyanpuru, SPM, University, Gurudev, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur, Halt, Motijheel) have been constructed on this route. The average distance between the two stations is one kilometre.
