Lucknow: The UP government has filed an affidavit against the JNU student Sharajeel Imam, accused of sedition. The government has filed this affidavit on a petition to get the FIR investigated by a single agency. The Yogi government of UP has stated in the affidavit, 'The FIR lodged by the UP police on Sharjeel Imam should not be linked with the FIR lodged by the police in Delhi, Manipur, Assam or Arunachal Pradesh'.

The Yogi government has said that the FIR lodged in UP is different because Sharjil's January 16 arguments in Aligarh spoiled the communal harmony. In the next two months, large-scale arson, stone-pelting, and police firing took place. Yogi government said that during the anti-CAA protest at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), the speech of the accused had an impact in different areas. Therefore it is different from those crimes which were committed in other states as shown in those FIRs.

The state government said that large-scale stone-pelting, arson and firing incidents took place in Aligarh district after the provocative speech delivered at the AMU on January 16 went viral on social media platforms. On 23 January, around 150-200 protesters, including AMU students, blocked the road and shouted slogans.
