Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee's nephew and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday did not turn up for his pre-scheduled appearance before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case related to the coal scam in West Bengal. Abhishek Banerjee, the 34-year-old nephew of Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, is said to have sent an email to the investigating officer of the case citing some personal reasons for his absence.

It is believed that the agency did not get bogged down for the reasons given by him, and if he does not appear, he may be summoned again as soon as possible. On March 21, after a second interrogation for nearly eight hours, the ED had sent him a fresh summons to appear before it on Tuesday. Officials said Tuesday's summons by the ED were part of the ongoing interrogation of the TMC MP to ascertain his alleged role in the case and his links with other accused. Banerjee's wife Rujira also did not attend the summons scheduled to appear at the ED office on March 22 and has now been asked to appear before it on March 30.

The Delhi High Court had on March 11 turned down his plea challenging the ED's notice, asking him to appear before the agency in Delhi instead of Kolkata. Last time, while leaving the ED office here, Banerjee had told the press that he was a "law-abiding citizen" and, therefore, had "cooperated" in the investigation. However, this time he did not appear before the ED even after the Delhi High Court's order.
