KOCHI: In a recent development, Cochin Customs authorities intercepted a significant quantity of gold valued at approximately Rs. 85 lakhs at the Cochin airport. The gold was discovered in a unique paste form and was found within two unattended bags. Officials revealed that the total weight of the seized gold was approximately 1,709 grams.
Officials received information from the staff of Indigo Airlines, which led to the discovery of two abandoned parcels containing gold paste. These parcels were recovered from the rear restroom of Indigo flight 6E 1404 arriving from AUH. Cochin Customs officials have initiated a thorough investigation into this discovery to uncover further details surrounding the incident.
This incident follows another recent gold seizure by Cochin Customs on a different occasion. In this case, authorities confiscated 529.39 grams of gold from a female passenger who had arrived from Bahrain. Notably, some of the confiscated gold was ingeniously concealed in paste form beneath the inner soles of her shoes.
Earlier, on August 6, Cochin Customs successfully seized a total of 1,364.60 grams of compound gold, with an estimated value of around Rs. 60 lakhs. These seizures underscore the heightened vigilance and continuous efforts of Cochin Customs officials to prevent unlawful transportation of precious metals through the airport.
