Columbia University has decided to scrap its big graduation ceremony due to ongoing pro-Palestinian protests. Instead, they'll have smaller, school-based events this week and next.

The university, based in New York City, made the announcement on Monday. They said they've listened to students who felt it's better to have smaller ceremonies where they can be recognized individually.

The past few weeks have been tough for Columbia, with protests on campus. After talking with students, the university decided to cancel the big ceremony planned for May 15.

Most of the smaller ceremonies will now happen at Columbia's sports complex, about 5 miles north of the main campus.

Columbia had already switched to online classes because of the protests. Over 200 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested in recent weeks, causing disruptions on campus.

Other universities, like the University of Southern California, have also canceled big graduation events due to protests. Some schools, though, are carrying on with beefed-up security.

The protests are linked to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, a Palestinian group. The students want their universities to stop supporting companies that do business with Israel or help in the conflict.

Israel launched airstrikes on Gaza after Hamas attacked Israel in October. The violence has led to many casualties, mainly among Palestinians. The protests aim to raise awareness and push for change.

The decision by Columbia University reflects a broader trend of universities grappling with balancing free expression and campus safety amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Protests have erupted on campuses across the United States, with students advocating for various forms of action, including divestment from companies linked to Israel's military operations.

As tensions persist, universities face increasing pressure to address the concerns of their student bodies while maintaining a commitment to academic freedom and inclusivity. The cancellation of the main commencement ceremony at Columbia University underscores the impact of these protests on campus life and highlights the complexities of navigating contentious political issues within educational institutions.
