New Delhi: Former Special Secretary of India's intelligence agency RA&W, GBS Siddhu, has made several important revelations while reacting to the Khalistan issue. He claimed that the initiation and management of 'Operation Bhindranwale' were being carried out by several leaders sitting in the Prime Minister's residence at 1, Akbar Road, including knowledgeable Jai Singh, Sanjay Gandhi, Kamal Nath, and Indira Gandhi. GBS Siddhu, the former Special Secretary of RA&W, revealed that this all started in the mid-1970s when Jai Singh and Sanjay Gandhi conspired to create tensions between the Akali Dal and the Janata Party. The Akali Dal is a party that fought for the rights of Sikhs in Punjab, while the Janata Party was considered a Hindu nationalist party. However, both parties shared similar views on nationalism and had good relations. According to GBS Siddhu, it was the Congress party that plotted to create a division between them by planting Bhindranwale and raising the Khalistan issue, which would prompt Sikhs to demand a separate country while Hindus naturally opposed it, further exacerbating the animosity between the two.

Siddhu further revealed that Kamal Nath had discussed recruiting extremist Sikh saints during that time. He mentioned that people, including the police and administration, used to address Bhindranwale as 'Sir' or 'Janab.' He was turned into a prominent figure with a complete plan. Siddhu mentioned that Indira Gandhi herself used to say that she could be assassinated, but she had no concern about it. During that time, Jai Singh, who later became the Home Minister, built Bhindranwale's image in the media.

GBS Siddhu exposed that during his stay in Canada, he discovered that only two people were discussing Khalistan there. After returning to India in 1979, when he was sent to RA&W, the agency did not even have a separate building. It was during this time, in December 1980, that a new department within RA&W was established to investigate Sikh extremism and relations with the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, although there were no such cases at that time.

The former intelligence officer further explained that Sanjay Gandhi and Jai Singh decided to make Khalistan an issue. During this period, Siddhu was given instructions to prepare proposals for the new branches of RA&W, particularly in the United States and Europe, where the Sikh population was significant. However, when Siddhu was in Canada, apart from two individuals, there was no prominent presence of Khalistan. Siddhu later discovered that his name was being used without his knowledge. He also revealed that an elaborate conspiracy was orchestrated to arrest Bhindranwale.

Siddhu further disclosed, 'Congress made a plan to negotiate with the Akali Dal so that they would feel that the problem was being resolved...'
