New Delhi: According to sources, Congress leader Kirti Azad would join the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the national capital. The development comes as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee prepares to travel to Delhi for a visit that would last until November 25.
Kirti Azad was dismissed from the Bharatiya Janata Party on December 23, 2015, for openly targetting Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over suspected irregularities and corruption in the Delhi and District Cricket Association, and eventually joined the Congress in 2018.
Azad, a cricketer-turned-politician, was elected to the Lok Sabha three times from the Bihar town of Darbhanga. He ran for the BJP in the 2014 general elections. Azad was a member of India's World Cup-winning team in 1983.
Mamata Banerjee's visit to the city comes only days before the start of Parliament's winter session, which is set to begin on November 29. During her visit to Delhi, she will meet PM Modi on Wednesday to discuss problems relating to the Border Security Force (BSF) and the state's growth. In July of this year, Banerjee paid a visit to Delhi. It was her first trip to Bengal since the Trinamool Congress reclaimed power in the Bengal Assembly elections. She met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during her recent visit to Delhi.
