GUWAHATI: An Assam court has pulled up the state police for filing a false FIR against Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani from Gujarat. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram has lashed out at Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma over the issue. He asked if the chief minister would entrust the CBI with the task of finding out who was the person who lodged the FIR against Jignesh.
On the matter, Chidambaram further said that the court found that no sensible person can dare to defy the modesty of a woman police officer in the presence of two male police officers and there is no basis for the FIR. In a series of tweets, Congress leader P Chidambaram said the court found that there is no evidence that Mevani is a madman.
In fact, Barpeta District and Sessions Judge Aparesh Chakraborty, referring to the police encounters, requested the Gauhati High Court to direct the state police force to reform itself. The judge said the high court should take steps to stop Assam police from registering false FIRs, and shooting or injuring the accused like in the present case. For this, the court may consider directing the police to improve themselves, which has become a regular phenomenon in the state.
