Bangalore: Veteran Congress leader and former CM Siddaramaiah on Friday stirred another controversy while defending Muslim girl students wearing hijabs in the Karnatak assembly. The Congress leader said Hindu women and "Swamiji" also cover their heads. However, he later clarified that he had a lot of respect for religious leaders and that his intention was not to insult them. After Siddaramaiah's statement on the hijab controversy, BJP leaders and other organisations slammed the Congress leader.

It said Siddaramaiah was trying to please the minorities. Later, the organisations have also demanded an apology from him. Siddaramaiah has blamed BJP leaders in the state for the hijab controversy. Speaking to the press at his native village Siddaramaiah Hundi in Mysore, he said, "The BJP is responsible for the hijab controversy. Muslim girls wear scarfs on their heads. What's wrong with that. Don't Hindu women cover their heads with clothes?"

The Congress leader said, "We have to respect human beings. When it's raining, you can't send a Muslim or a Christian from a tree shelter to another place. When you fall ill and are operated upon, blood is taken beyond race and religion. "The ruling BJP thinks they are cornering the Congress with these issues. But they don't know they're surrounding themselves by doing so."
