Bangalore: The hijab controversy that started at PU College in Karnataka is now getting a political colour. Recently, a controversial statement by the Congress leader has come out in Hubli on the issue. Congress leader Zameer Ahmed, while talking to the press, said that hijab in Islam means purdah, which covers the beauty of a woman. According to him, if women don't wear it, they can be raped.

Zameer Ahmed further said that 'in Islam, hijab means veil. When the girl/child is older, they keep her in a hijab, i.e., to not show the beauty of her, to keep it hidden, the hijab is worn.' Zameer Ahmed said, 'Today you see, rapes are increasing rapidly in the country. All this is because women don't live in the veil. It is not from today and it is not necessary. But those who want to hide their beauty, want its safety, they wear hijab. It's not from today, it's been years.'

Jamir Ahmed's statement came after a journalist of the news agency ANI questioned him that nowhere in the Quran was it said that the dress code of women should be hijab. To this, Zameer Ahmed reacted by saying that it is not mandatory, but by not wearing it, rapes are taking place.
