Congress MP Vasant Chavan Passes Away at 64 After Prolonged Illness

MAHARASTRA: Congress MP from Nanded, Vasant Chavan, passed away at the age of 64 after battling a prolonged illness, according to the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. His last rites will be held in his hometown of Nanded. Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Chavan's unwavering commitment and loyalty to the Congress party, even during challenging times.

Chavan, who began his political career in 1978 as the Sarpanch of Naigaon village, rose through the ranks to hold significant positions, including President of Zilla Parishad and over 16 years of service in both Houses of the Maharashtra legislature. In 2014, he joined Congress and was elected to the Nanded Lok Sabha seat, reviving the party's influence in the region.

His dedication extended beyond politics, with a notable contribution to education as the President of Janata High School in Nanded. Chavan's leadership will be remembered for his efforts to strengthen the Congress party and his commitment to his community.

Vasant Chavan began his political journey as an Independent MLA representing the Naigaon Assembly constituency before joining the Congress party in 2014. In the same year, he was appointed to the Public Accounts Committee of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Chavan's political career took off when he was first elected to the Maharashtra Assembly from the Naigaon Vidhan Sabha constituency in Nanded district in 2009.

His leadership roots trace back to 1978 when he served as the Sarpanch of his village in Naigaon. This role paved the way for his election to the Zilla Parishad. Soon after, he ascended to the State Legislative Council, where he served for 16 years, working in both houses of the legislature.
