NEW DELHI: The Congress party is now in a state of confusion over the presidency after its humiliating defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Quoting sources, some party leaders want the Congress to hand over the command of UPA to Sonia Gandhi once again. In view of the party's situation following the resignation of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, some Congress leaders have appealed to Sonia Gandhi to re-handle the Congress presidentship, though Sonia Gandhi has categorically refused to speak on the matter.
It may be mentioned that Rahul Gandhi has resigned as party president, taking responsibility for the Congress party's defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. After a long drama, the Congress party finally had to accept Rahul Gandhi's resignation. Rahul Gandhi had earlier given a month's time to the Congress Working Committee to appoint a new Chairman, but the Congress Working Committee could not do so and Congress leaders had repeatedly appealed to Rahul Gandhi to continue in office.

Rahul Gandhi, during his resignation, had said that the next Congress President should be made a person outside the Nehru-Gandhi family. But the people inside the party sometimes took the name of Priyanka Vadra and Rahul Gandhi. Now, the news of Sonia Gandhi being handed over to the Congress again has made it clear that no consensus has yet been reached on the appointment of a president outside the Gandhi family in the Congress.
