New Delhi: Congress party may get its new president by January next year. It is expected that the Congress party may call an All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting in January next year to elect its new national president. Two senior party leaders related to this matter have given this information to a private news channel.

At the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Monday, a section of Congress leaders had initially suggested that the session should be held within a year, but Rahul Gandhi and several other leaders insisted on holding it in the next six months. The party also agrees with the January schedule for this comprehensive organizational exercise by the Congress, as no major elections are going to be held after the Bihar Assembly elections this year.

In 2021, elections to the five assemblies - Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry - may be held in April, till then the Congress gets ample time to come together with the reconstituted team led by a new leader and strengthen the party. However, it is not clear whether Rahul Gandhi will be handed over the reins of the Congress or any other leader will be made the party president.
