New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will participate in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony today, representing the Congress as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, the party announced in a statement. This decision came after consultations with various INDIA bloc leaders.

However, the Trinamool Congress, another partner in the INDIA Bloc, will not be attending the ceremony. In a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) held recently, Rahul Gandhi was urged to assume the role of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. While Gandhi deferred his decision, Sonia Gandhi was confirmed as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal reiterated the CWC's view that Rahul Gandhi is the best candidate to lead the opposition campaign in Parliament. Rahul Gandhi assured the CWC members that he would soon make a decision regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, Mallikarjun Kharge commented on the Lok Sabha election results, labeling them as a "decisive rejection" of divisive politics. He acknowledged the party's inability to replicate its past success in states where it had previously performed well.

After a three-hour discussion on the party's electoral performance and future strategy, the CWC decided to form dedicated committees to assess the party's performance across all states, including those under its governance.

Prime Minister Modi is set to take the oath for a third consecutive term, leading a coalition government. The ceremony will witness the presence of several dignitaries, including leaders from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Seychelles, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Nepal, and Bhutan.
