New Delhi: Indian Railways has reported that in view of the coronavirus epidemic, it has earned a revenue of Rs 429.90 crore through Shramik special trains run from May 1 till July 9. On giving information, a senior official of the ministry said that the Railways have spent about Rs 2400 crore in the running of Shramik trains.

Congress has questioned this information given by the Railways. The party's veteran leader Rajiv Shukla tweeted that from whom did Railway earn this money? From migrant laborers or from state governments? According to the HT report, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have received the most money from Railways as revenue. According to the report, revenue of Rs 102 crore has been received from Gujarat, Rs 85 crore from Maharashtra and Rs 34 crore from Tamil Nadu.

The fares of Shramik trains should have been paid by the state governments, although there were also reports of local administration taking money from migrant laborers. These trains were started from 1 May. With its help, migrant laborers trapped in other cities were transported to their state and village. Due to the lockdown, these laborers had neither employment nor money to eat or ration. They were forced to go to their respective villages on foot.
