New Delhi: Congress spokesperson Shakti Singh Gohil said that the Gandhi family never had any greed for the post. Gohil claimed that Narasimha Rao had spoken to Sonia Gandhi to become Prime Minister in 1991, but she refused. In UPA-1, Sonia Gandhi, not herself, had offered Manmohan Singh a proposal to make him a PM. With which the Congress spokesman said that former party chief Rahul Gandhi had the opportunity to become PM in UPA-2. He told that the then PM Manmohan Singh had offered Rahul Gandhi to become PM due to ill health. Gohil further said that the former Congress president refused to accept Manmohan Singh's offer and requested that he complete his term.

According to media reports, Gohil insisted that the Nehru-Gandhi family has always shown renunciation and that party and country interest is to be seen above personal interests. He made big sacrifices on many occasions and never got lured by power. He told the old example that the Gandhi family never had any greed for the post. He told that today the youth and Congress workers of the country want that Rahul Gandhi is the only one to lead the party. But the power to take this decision is with the Congress Working Committee and the All India Congress Committee.

In a recent book 'India Tomorrow', it has been claimed that Priyanka Gandhi supported Rahul Gandhi in which she said that a person outside the Gandhi family was appointed for the Congress President. According to this book, Priyanka Gandhi has also told that even if a party president is not from the Gandhi family, they will be their 'boss'. She has said that there are many qualified people who can lead the party.
