Congress Suspends Punjab MLA Sandeep Jakhar for Alleged Anti-Party Activities

Chandigarh: The Congress Party has taken the decision to suspend Sandeep Jakhar, an MLA from Abohar in Punjab, due to his alleged involvement in activities against the party's interests. Sandeep Jakhar is the nephew of Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar, who was formerly associated with Congress before joining BJP in May 2022.

The suspension was communicated through a letter issued by All India Congress Committee’s General Secretary Tariq Anwar. The letter outlined various accusations against Sandeep Jakhar, including his failure to participate in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a Congress initiative led by Rahul Gandhi, and the presence of a BJP flag atop a communal residence where he lived. Furthermore, the Congress Party claimed that Sandeep Jakhar openly criticized the party and its Punjab President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. Another accusation was directed at Sandeep for openly defending his uncle Sunil Jakhar.

In an interesting note, there was a discrepancy in the suspension letter's mention of Sandeep Jakhar's address district. While the letter stated Ferozepur as the district, the actual location, Village Panjkosi, is in the Fazilka district. Sandeep Jakhar responded to the suspension, emphasizing that he remains committed to his work and his constituents. He reiterated his alignment with his uncle, Sunil Jakhar, since his departure from Congress to BJP.

Previously, Sandeep Jakhar had engaged in public disputes with Congress leaders, particularly Raja Warring, as he staunchly defended his uncle's shift to BJP. This included challenges and exchanges on social media platforms. In a recent tweet, Sandeep Jakhar referenced Robert Frost's famous poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" to express his determination to continue his journey despite challenges. He also acknowledged the Congress Party and expressed gratitude to most of his colleagues for their guidance and mutual respect. The suspension of Sandeep Jakhar comes against the backdrop of the ongoing dynamics between Congress and BJP in Punjab, particularly in the context of Sunil Jakhar's political transition.
