NEW DELHI: In response to the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that it did nothing for the people other than pay lip service and that the BJP had opened 48 crore Jan Dhan accounts nationwide. This was said during his remarks on the motion of thanks in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Targetting the Congress said, he said: "When I became the Prime Minister in 2014, I saw that the Congress had created problems and issues everywhere, even though they wanted to create a strong foundation for India's overall development." 

Commenting upon Congress's slogan on poverty, PM Modsaidid, "Congress used to say 'Gareebi Hatao' but did nothing for over 40 years.As against them, we work hard to meet the expectations and aspirations of the people of the country. Our priority is the common public, and this is the reason we made LPG connections available to 25 crore families in the country." However, as the Prime Minister's address continued in the upper house, a slogan from opposition "We want JPC" also rang simultaneously in the House.

Targeting Mallikarjun Kharge, the head of the Congress, who had on Wednesday launched a harsh criticism of the Prime Minister and his administration over the Adani issue, PM Modi said: "Khargeji says that I visit Kalaburagi too frequently. He should view the effort that was done there. A jab at the opposition, PM Modi stated, "While common population is being empowered, the accounts of many are been stopped and I understand their agony." 1.70 crore Jan Dhan bank accounts have been opened in Karnataka, including over 8 lakh in Kalaburagi.

"Around 11 crore homes have gotten tap water connections in the previous three to four years. We created the Jan Dhan account campaign to help the general public gain more power. In the past nine years, 48 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened nationwide, according to PM Modi, who was speaking about the current administration's development initiatives.
