The opposition Congress said on Monday that it will hold a series of protests in Assam to demand a probe into Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife and son's suspected land grabbing scheme.

President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Bhupen Kumar Borah, said in Guwahati on Monday that party members will stage rallies across the state from January 10 to February 6 to call for a judicial inquiry. "During this time, all of our district committees have planned a series of programmes in which all of our top officials, including MPs and MLAs, will participate." Borah stated, "We will submit memorandums to the DC (deputy commissioners) for transmission to the governor in order to request a judicial inquiry."

If the government does not form an investigation panel by February 6, he added, the Congress will ramp up protests in every district and take the issue to the national level. "We will also bring the subject up in Parliament." Inside and outside of Parliament, we will demonstrate against this historic land fraud. We'll deliver it to the White House and Jantar Mantar (in Delhi). Borah declared, "We shall not sit silently."
