Lucknow: Police in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district on Saturday said that a man allegedly drunk at that time broke down a statue of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at the intersection of the city. The police said the man, identified as Subhash Chauhan of Chauri area here, also vandalised the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Indira Mill intersection and fled from the spot. 

At the same time, Congress workers have sat on a dharna to protest against the incident. District Magistrate Aryaka Akhouri, while giving details of the incident, said that the accused man forcibly broke the marble statue by dropping it on the ground. He said he had come on a bike, but broke the statue and ran on foot. It was clear that he was completely drunk. 

The district magistrate further informed that a new statue of Mahatma Gandhi will be installed there soon. According to those present at the time of the incident, due to the man's action, hundreds of people, including police personnel, had gathered there. He said that before breaking the statue, the man had also created a ruckus for an hour.
