Washington: Abu Hamza, a former imam of London's Finsbury Park Mosque, is making a fresh bid for release from the confines of a US supermax prison where he has been serving a life sentence. 

Extradited to the United States in 2012 to face charges of terrorism and kidnapping, he was subsequently convicted in 2015 and sentenced to life behind bars.

Hamza's legal team is now asserting that he should be granted compassionate release due to his deteriorating health. They argue that he has endured multiple bouts of COVID-19, leaving him too ill to continue residing in solitary confinement.

However, the US government staunchly opposes Hamza's bid for release. Their argument revolves around the belief that he remains a potential threat to public safety, capable of inciting violence even from within prison walls.

Abu Hamza, born in Egypt, relocated to the United Kingdom during the 1970s. In 1997, he assumed the role of imam at Finsbury Park Mosque. He gained notoriety for his fiery sermons, often preaching hatred against Jews and Christians. 

Accusations of providing financial support to terrorist groups further compounded his legal troubles. In 2004, he faced arrest by British authorities on charges of inciting racial hatred, although he was eventually acquitted of these charges. Subsequently, he was arrested again, this time on terrorism-related charges.

His extradition to the United States in 2012 resulted in his conviction on 11 terrorism charges. Currently incarcerated at ADX Florence, a supermax prison located in Colorado.

The Abu Hamza case is characterized by its intricacies, with compelling arguments presented on both sides of the release bid. Ultimately, the federal judge presiding over the case will be tasked with determining whether compassionate grounds outweigh concerns of public safety.
