Chennai: Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin's recent statement, in which he called for the eradication of "sanatana dharma" (an ancient term often used to refer to Hinduism), has ignited controversy and drawn criticism from the opposition BJP. Udhayanidhi Stalin made these remarks during a 'Sanatana Abolition Conference,' where he compared sanatana dharma to diseases like "dengue" and "malaria," advocating not just opposition but complete eradication.

In response to Udhayanidhi's comments, K Annamalai, the President of the Tamil Nadu BJP, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his displeasure. He accused Udhayanidhi and his party, the DMK, of adopting ideas from Christian missionaries, suggesting that these ideas aimed to cultivate individuals who would promote a particular ideology. Annamalai criticized the DMK's focus on accumulating wealth and implied that they were out of touch with the spiritual essence of Tamil Nadu.

Furthermore, Natayana Thirupathi, the Vice President of the state BJP, characterized the DMK as a communal party that seeks to secure votes from the Muslim and Christian communities, highlighting their religious voting patterns. He emphasized that "sanatana dharma" is an eternal concept and accused the DMK of being like a cancer that would be countered by the principles of "sanatana dharma." This controversy has underscored the ongoing tensions between political parties in Tamil Nadu over matters related to religion and ideology.
