Along with this, these deaths reminded the epidemic of 50 years ago in the mind of the elders of Barkot in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. Cholera was spread in Barkot in July 1970. In a village with a population of only six hundred, 39 people died in a single day. In a panic, people fled leaving the corpses in the open. They had quarantined themselves in the Chaani (grass hut) built in the forest.

88-year-old Jaipal Singh says that his sister also died of cholera. His neighbour Bahtar Singh's wife and two daughters also died of cholera. Not only this, while returning home, six employees from outside areas also died on the way. According to Jaipal Singh, there was a shortage of resources at that time. In order to avoid the epidemic, only the filters made in the forests became the quarantine ward of the villagers.

Retired health worker Mor Singh, who worked with the health department team at the time of cholera outbreak, said that the dead bodies of cholera were kept in the building of the leprosy prevention centre in Barkot. When the family did not reach to take the corpse, the cleaning staff along with the Ajmeri, the other sanitation workers rolled the corpses towards the Yamuna. The DM then ordered a gun license to Barkot resident Phulla Nath to kill all the dogs. Within two days, all the dogs became victims and died.
