NEW DELHI: Due to a roof collapse incident at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, all SpiceJet flights will now operate from Terminal 3 until October 26, 2024. The domestic carrier issued a travel advisory on July 5 to inform passengers of this change.

SpiceJet announced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that passengers will receive all necessary information via SMS or email on their registered contact details. The airline also advised travelers to allow sufficient travel time and regularly check their flight status.

Traditionally, budget airlines SpiceJet and IndiGo have used Terminal 1 (T1) for their domestic flights to and from Delhi. T1, one of three terminals at Delhi Airport, has an annual capacity of 40 million passengers.

T1 Closure and Its Impact
According to a Reuters report, the main domestic terminal, T1, is expected to remain closed for a few weeks following the roof collapse. This closure will increase pressure on the other two terminals handling domestic flights.

The report quoted a source at GMR Airports Infrastructure, the operator of Delhi Airport, saying, "The terminal will not reopen until all safety checks are thoroughly completed. Depending on the severity of the issue, it could take a few weeks or even longer."

The incident has affected numerous passengers, with at least 21,690 IndiGo passengers and 925 SpiceJet passengers impacted last week as flights were moved to other terminals. Refunds have been processed for 9,972 passengers, including 9,431 from IndiGo and 541 from SpiceJet, according to the Hindustan Times.

Delhi Airport handles around 1,400 flights daily across its three terminals. Before the incident, flight operations from T1 were limited to less than 15% of the total as the terminal was gradually resuming operations after recent expansion and refurbishment.
