The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai, Maharashtra has joined the BCG vaccine trial with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The aim is to find out whether the Basil Calumet-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is effective in preventing corona in the elderly population of India. Pandemic has shown that the risk of serious illness caused by the virus in elderly persons is high. The death rate is high in the age group above 60.

According to officials, there have been some facts related to BCG supplements normally given to improve the immunity of children against TB, which is said to have immunized other respiratory infections including viral infections. BMC said, BCG supplements can be given easily and it has shown promising results.

This study of BCG vaccine is being done in the districts of Corona hotspots including Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Jodhpur and New Delhi. It is being jointly carried out by MCGM, in Mumbai, in Pari Moment Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital and Public Health. Permission has also been received for this study. This study will be done on elderly persons of the age group of 60 and 75 years who are not suffering from corona and who do not have cancer. 

People who will be involved in this study will be closely monitored for 6 months. Complete clinical work will be done. This trial will mainly be done in F South and G South Ward. BMC said that 250 people are expected to be included in the BCG trial. If needed, the number will be increased further. It was said that if this study was found effective, then BCG drug would help in reducing the disease and mortality in the elderly population.
