NEW DELHI: As per data from the union health ministry updated on 5 April 2023, India has recorded 4,435 new cases of COVID in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of active cases to 21,091.

Despite the return to near-normalcy in society and the economy, a leading epidemiologist warned that the pandemic is still far from being under control because coronavirus infections in India are doubling every 4-5 days. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium identifies Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16 as the leading variant in India, making up 60% of cases.
In view of this, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said there is no need for concern because the Omicron sub-variant that is spreading throughout the nation has not caused an increase in hospital admissions.

In light of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, the Union Health Ministry has urged individuals to exercise caution. The warning also cautioned against ignoring Covid-19 symptoms because the current weather conditions may help the virus spread.
Maharashtra saw a sharp increase in Covid cases, with the state reporting an 186% increase in cases on the previous day. During this time, the state reported 711 new cases of the virus and 4 death. After the increase in cases, wearing a mask has become mandatory in a number of Maharashtran districts.

The national capital also experienced an increase in cases after reporting 521 new cases on Monday, the largest day increase since August 27, 2022. The positivity rate for the city was 15.64 percent, which showed a considerable increase in the number of individuals testing positive for the virus. In spite of the surge in cases, the health bulletin released by the city's health department said that the primary cause of the reported fatality was not Covid-19, but was instead incidental.
