Six members of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) were reportedly killed in a gunfight with security forces in Vizag district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday morning A top Maoist leader Sande Gangaiha from Telangana is believed to have been killed in the incident, according to unconfirmed sources.
The gunfight broke out at Theegalametta forest area of Koyyuru block. Superintendent of Police, Vizag, B Krishna Rao, said the Maoists fired upon the security forces who retaliated.
The greyhounds started the combing operation following an information on the movement of Maoists in Teegalametta near Mumpa in Koyyuru police station limits of Visakhapatnam district. The Greyhounds, who are specially trained for anti-Maoist operations, were involved in the gunfight. They were conducting combing operation in the area.
The police added that search operation was still underway and additional police forces were on their way to the site.
The sources added that a helicopter-assisted aerial survey was also being carried out to track the fleeing Maoists, who are said to be top leaders of the extremists.
