Cuttack Sun Hospital shuts down temporarily following Fire breakout v

The Cuttack district administration on Wednesday has directed to shut down the Sun Hospital temporarily in connection with the fire mishap that took place on February 1. Collector Bhabani Shankar Chayani asked the concerned officials to close the multi-specialty health care centre after hospital authorities failed to advance satisfactory explanations on a show-cause notice served by the administration over the mishap.

A major fire had broken out on the top floor of the hospital building on February 1, triggering panic among patients, attendants and staff.

The District Collector said that the hospital will remain closed until its management come up with fitting reply. Patients? treatment and laboratory activities have also been restricted till further order, Chayani added.

It is pertinent to note, the hospital was operating sans a fire safety certificate. However, evacuation mock-drills were conducted at the hospital at regular interval, Maheswar Swain, Director, Odisha Fire and Disaster Response Academy (OFDRA) had said earlier.

As many as seven fire fighting units including 50-60 personnel were engaged to extinguish the blaze. The firefighters had taken the help of hydraulic platform to carry out operations on top of the building. After the hour-long operation, they had successfully brought the inferno under control.

As many as 11 patients were undergoing treatment at the hospital and all of them had been rescued before being sent to other hospitals to continue treatment.
